Program Overview

The Newcomers Program at Paterson Public Schools is located at three schools:
- School No. 15 for grades 1-5
- New Roberto Clemente for grades 6-8
- Newcomers High School Grade 9-10
It is designed for students that are new to the United States with limited English Proficiency and have limited, interrupted, or no formal education from their native countries. The grade levels range from1st to 10th grade. The instructional program is developed to meet the Newcomers' needs before they enter general education classrooms. Students receive two periods of Language Arts and Mathematics in Spanish as well as English as a Second Language for 90 minutes, daily. The goals of the Newcomer Program are to help students develop linguistic and content skills in their native language and to start adapting to a new culture and acquiring English.
