Newcomers Program

Program Overview

The Newcomers Program for Spanish Speakers at Paterson Public Schools is located at three schools :

  • School No. 15 for grades 4-5
  • New Roberto Clemente for grades 6-8
  • Newcomers High School Grade 9-12

The Newcomer Program is designed for students who are new to the United States, have limited English proficiency, and have experienced two or more years of interrupted or no formal education in their native countries. Serving students in grades 4 through 12, the program provides targeted instructional support to address their unique needs before transitioning into native language bilingual classrooms.

Students receive Language Arts and Mathematics in Spanish, along with daily English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction. The program aims to develop students' linguistic and academic skills in their native language while helping them adapt to a new culture and learn English. Additionally, they will receive other instructional content in Spanish to further support their bilingual development.

Determination for enrollment in the Newcomer Program will be made by the Multilingual Learners Department.
