Scholars Program

To ensure that all schools in the district provide advanced learning opportunities and equitable access regardless of location or grade level, the district will expand advanced learning opportunities and launch a new advanced learning program called the Scholars Program.

School districts are increasingly moving away from labels such as “gifted and talented”. Moving away from labels helps districts focus on potential and growth, ensuring more students have access to advanced learning opportunities.

Implementing this program allows advanced learners to collaborate and thrive in their neighborhood schools, fostering peer support and maximizing educational engagement.

2026-2027

The Scholars Program will be offered at Charles J. Riley School No. 9 in Grades 3-5 and Dr. Hani Awadallah Middle School in Grades 6-8

2027-2028

The Scholars Program will be offered at School No. 26 in Grades 3-5 and School No. 21 in Grades 6-8

Expanding advanced courses in middle schools across subjects like ELA, math, social studies, and science will significantly enhance opportunities for advanced learners and promote deeper learning experiences.

Ensuring equitable access to advanced programming is vital for all students, promoting enriched learning opportunities that foster excellence and achievement regardless of background or circumstance.

A scholar is more than just a strong student. A scholar is a person who pursues learning with dedication and engages deeply in study and thinking.

More formally, a scholar is someone who:

  • Has strong knowledge in one or more academic areas
  • Thinks critically and thoughtfully about ideas
  • Seeks understanding, not just answers
  • Values education and intellectual growth

How Students Are Identified

Students are considered for accelerated instruction based on a combination of classroom performance, assessment data, and teacher input. No single test or score determines placement.

Programming

The State of New Jersey does not endorse a particular program or model for serving students with advanced learning needs. Rather, districts may employ a variety of approaches, including pull-out programs, classroom-based differentiated instruction, subject or grade acceleration, flexible pacing, curriculum compacting, distance learning, advanced courses, and individualized programs offered during the school day.

In Paterson Public Schools, accelerated learning initiatives are designed as comprehensive, articulated educational programs that provide high levels of rigor, appropriate challenge, and high expectations while maximizing student growth and developing each student's unique abilities. Across grade levels, these programs are designed to foster critical thinking, problem-solving, intellectual curiosity, independence, leadership, and the ability to make meaningful connections between classroom learning and the world beyond school.

To meet the diverse needs of advanced learners, teachers utilize instructional strategies such as subject acceleration, curriculum compacting, flexible pacing, tiered instruction, and differentiated instruction. These approaches provide opportunities for increased challenge and complexity, advanced materials when appropriate, independent study and research, and deeper exploration of core curriculum concepts. Students participating in accelerated learning opportunities are expected to embrace academic challenge, take responsibility for their learning, and demonstrate a commitment to continued growth.
