Godwin Mill |
(Hamil Mill)

![]() |
The original mill was named The Hamil Mill in 1822. It consisted of 120 workers operating 2,100 spindles and 60 power looms. They processed 2100 lbs. of cotton into 6,500 yards of cloth weekly! This mill grew from a $20,000 business in 1825 to a $90,000 business in just the first two years. The name was changed to The Godwin Mill in 1858 when a new building restored the old site. |
| About twenty one years
after the Godwin Mill was restored, it was either empty or sub-leased to
many small businesses. In 1872 the occupants of the Passaic Mill bought
the lease for the Godwin Mill. Robert Hamil and James Booth renamed the
mill back to The Hamil Mill. The firm then used the mill for manufacturing
ribbons and twill goods. This particular firm had an initial capitalization
of $500,000 and continued growing through the end of the century.
