PATERSON PUBLIC SCHOOLS EXPANDS HIGH SCHOOL RENEWAL WITH SCHOOL CHOICE OPTIONS AND RESTRUCTURING OF JFK HIGH SCHOOL

School Choice Community Forum: March 3 at JFK High School

PATERSON, New Jersey, February 17, 2011 – On Thursday, March 3rd, State District Superintendent Dr. Donnie W. Evans will host a community forum to provide an important update on the district’s High School Renewal Initiative.  In this forum, the District’s high school academy options available to new students, and the restructuring of John F. Kennedy High School will be discussed.  The forum will take place at John F. Kennedy High School, 61-127 Preakness Avenue, Paterson, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

In the 2009/2010 school year, Paterson launched a High School Renewal Initiative designed to improve student achievement at the high school level by developing new models and instructional practices. Since this launch, over 70 staff and community members have participated in this critical ongoing initiative.  One recent outcome was the restructuring of Eastside High School into its “three schools within a school model”.

Now with a continued focus on improving student achievement, the school district is set to announce several changes for the 2011/2012 school year.  Dr. Evans commented, “In 2009, I said that Paterson’s high schools will look very different in two years time.  During this forum, I will review our plans to restructure our high schools including John F. Kennedy.”

Every 8th grade or entering student, along with their parents and guardians, are encouraged to attend.  Community partners are also welcome to attend. Interpreters will be on site to facilitate communication.  In case of inclement weather, the “snow date” for this forum will be Tuesday, March 8th.
