Great News to Note
School 8 brings Broadway to Paterson! Students performed with Georgine DiMaria, 2006 Miss New Jersey in a spring concert entitled “Kids on Broadway.” Through song and drama, students reenacted five Broadway plays: Oliver, The Sound of Music, Grease, Annie and The Wizard of Oz. Georgine, daughter of Ms. DiMaria, School 8 vocal teacher, performed choral selections with the school’s chorus. The event was featured in the Fri., June 8 issue of The Herald News and The Record.
Great happenings at Paterson Pre-Collegiate Teaching Academy (PPTA)! Two students were the recipients of the 2007 Paterson Students Poetry Contest, sponsored by the Theater and Poetry Project at Passaic County Community College (PCCC). Mecca Johnson, ranked first place and Alphonso McDowell received Honorable Mention. Both students were honored at an award ceremony, held on Thurs., May 24.
Congratulations to the entire junior class at PPTA for passing the Language Arts portion of the High School Proficiency Assessment. What an accomplishment!
School 18 truly goes global! For an interesting social studies project, each homeroom class at #18 adopted a country to research and created an exhibit. Staff and students embarked on an international tour with custom made passports allowing entry into a host of countries: China, Italy, Japan, Spain, Mexico and Russia!
It’s cool to conserve. Representatives from the Department of the Public Advocate presented a conservation awareness program entitled “It's Cool to Conserve.” Students in grades K- 8 were shown a video and listened to an oral presentation that focused on the various ways that people can increase their savings by practicing simple conservation tips. Students were encouraged to share their thoughts regarding energy conservation through a poster drawing contest. Alba Jimenez, from School 26, was awarded a trophy for her winning entry. Winners were selected from statewide entries and can be viewed at www.rpa.state.nj.us.
Calling All Talented Students. The third Annual Youth Talent Show at School 8 will help raise funds for a great cause. All students are invited to showcase their talents in song, dance, poetry and drama. Proceeds will go to the St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital – Hematology/Oncology Unit. Info: School 8, ext. 10080. Tickets: $2.00. The show will be held on this Friday, June 15 at 6 p.m.
Celebrating literacy throughout the district! The Paterson Public Library held a celebration promoting the 50 Book Club, which encourages students to read 50 books during the course of the school year. The event was held on Thurs., June 7.
Words of praise for top poets! Henry Polanco and Mahfuza Kochi, both students at John F. Kennedy High School, recently attended a poetry competition at Kean University, with Hentry placing 4th in the state! Many thanks to dedicated English teachers Ms. Nancy Wymer and Ms. Lories Nye-Slockbower, both at the Communications Academy, for pursuing these great opportunities for Paterson students.
Summer meals for students. David Buckholtz asks that all schools participating in the upcoming summer food program notify the Department of Food Services by Thurs., July 5. Info: ext. 10950.
Important Dates to Remember
Dr. Glascoe to Present Findings of the Stupski Foundation. Every month, staff, parents and community stakeholders are invited to participate in the district’s monthly Collaborative Community Meetings. Board of Education Forum! All are invited to attend an important meeting given by the Board members that will discuss their upcoming plans and outline their roles and responsibilities in working with Dr. Glascoe. Parents and guardians! Register for Supplemental Educational Services at the upcoming Provider Fair. Free after-school tutoring sessions are available for eligible students attending schools 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 11, 12, 13, 15, 17, 18, 20, 21, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, Martin Luther King Jr. Educational Complex – School 30 and Edward W. Kilpatrick. Come, meet the different organizations who provide these services and register your student for next year. Enrollment is limited and will be accepted on a first come, first served basis.
