Dr. Evans' Message
Summer 2011

I hope you are having an enjoyable summer. We are already diligently preparing for next year.  Here is a preview of several key areas that the district will address – per our five year Strategic Plan – beginning this September:

  • Focus on improving school culture – A healthy school culture affects student and teacher success more than any other reform or school improvement effort.  Our plans include the release our new Student Code of Conduct and implementation of preventive programs to address bullying in schools.  district-wide.
  • Create Gifted and Talented Continuum for grades 3-12.  Although in general, the district is challenged by low student achievement, many Paterson children perform at advanced proficient levels on state tests and other measures. By creating a gifted and talented program and by offering additional honors and advanced placement courses, we will provide challenging standards-based instructional practices and highly engaging learning opportunities to those students with exceptional capacity.
  • Expand our alternative school program.  A necessary step that will provide appropriate learning environments to serve students at risk of educational failure, as indicated by poor grades, truancy, and disruptive behavior.
  • Evaluate and restructure our Special Ed and English as Second Language Programs
  • Expand Fine Arts in K-8 Schools
  • Develop and implement a parent outreach initiative to increase parent involvement in schools
  • Create and implement a district-wide K-12 student progression plan.  A progression plan will establish criteria for promotion from one grade to another which will help to ensure that our students have attained the skills, concepts and knowledge needed to be successful at the next grade level.  Parents will be kept apprised of their child’s progress throughout the year.

As we continue planning for a productive and successful 2011/2012 school year, I would like to extend my best wishes to our students, parents, school and district staff, and all of our community partners, for a healthy, safe, and enjoyable summer.
