“In Two Years our High Schools Will Look Very Different.”
From graduation rates to test scores, the data related to student performance shows that we as a school district must develop new models and instructional practices at the high school level. This action is necessary in order to fulfill our mission of ensuring that every student is prepared to succeed at the institution of higher education of their choosing and in their chosen career.
Our goal, which is ambitious but highly attainable, requires a comprehensive plan with clearly defined strategies and action steps. To that end, we recently presented our High School Renewal Initiative to the Paterson Board of Education. This plan, which is available for review on the district website, will require the assistance and participation of a High School Renewal Advisory Committee, comprised of school and district officials, the Board of Education, community members, parents and other stakeholders. Together, we will work towards the full and successful implementation of our High School Renewal Initiative.
Bottom line: in two years, Paterson high schools will look, and feel, very different.
I am enthusiastic about this project for two very important reasons. First, as we work to improve our graduation rates and number of college-bound students, we are insuring the success and well-being of our entire community. As I have always said, the future of Paterson, the future of New Jersey, indeed the future of our nation depends on how well we fulfill our task of educating students. The second reason that I am enthusiastic about this project is because I know the timing is right. We have strengthened our partnerships in the community to the degree that I believe we will have the level of engagement and interest that is necessary to successfully complete a substantive plan of this nature. While we at the district will always vow to do our best, the participation of our community is mandatory and I am most positive about the outcome.
The High School Renewal Initiative and High School Renewal Advisory Committee are positive and tangible elements that will lead directly to student success in Paterson. I invite you to stay apprised of our progress by visiting our website at www.paterson.k12.nj.us.
